The black bass has been one of the most popular sport fish in the USA for generations. This may be partly due to the fact that, despite its relatively small size, it can put up a spectacular fight. In Europe, besides a few other southern European countries, the Andalusia region of Spain, in particular, boasts the best black bass stocks.

Raul Arcos is a passionate angler himself and has focused entirely on fishing for largemouth bass. Based in Cordoba, Raul fishes a number of reservoirs in the surrounding area, as well as a few located a 1-2 hour drive away. The waters are mostly situated within nature reserves, such as Navallana, Brena, and Jándula. To learn the sport from the ground up, Raul first gained considerable experience in the USA, the birthplace of largemouth bass, and is now applying this knowledge to his local waters. With great success: In a single test fishing trip, he landed well over 30 of these spiny predators – quite an achievement. They were predominantly caught using surface lures, which doubled the enjoyment of the fishing.
Raul uses specially designed “Black Bass” boats, like those found in the USA, for fishing in the lakes. At 5-6 meters long and equipped with a powerful outboard motor, they allow him to reach the fish quickly.
But the lakes in the Cordoba region have much more to offer: In addition to hard-fighting barbel (which also readily take soft plastic lures), there are also good populations of pike and zander – so predator fishing enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy here.

Season: Cordoba is an excellent destination both as a dedicated fishing trip (best visited in spring or autumn due to the temperatures – March to mid-June and September to November, respectively) and in combination with tuna fishing in the Strait of Gibraltar (then in June/July).
Getting there: Direct flights from Germany to Malaga. From there, it’s about a 1.5-hour drive to Cordoba by rental car.

The boats
Your skipper, Raul, has several boats that he uses on the lakes. These are typically 5-6 meters long and powered by 50-115 hp engines. They are equipped with echo sounders and sonar.

Accommodation in the Cordoba region
Depending on your preference, you can either stay directly in the old town of Cordoba (e.g. in the Posada de Vallina) to experience some of the city’s atmosphere, or in a cozy lodge outside with a lake view – for example, we offer Casas de Alisne.

The Hotel Posada de Vallina is located in the middle of the old town.
