Fishing and Family Vacations in Sri Lanka
“Radiant Island”—that is the meaning of a loose translation of the two words “Sri” and “Lanka.” This name is certainly well-deserved, for the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean” is truly a natural beauty, and many visitors fall in love with the blend of colors and scents—and, of course, with the incredibly friendly people—the moment they arrive.
The island, formerly known as Ceylon, is located just about 30 km south of the Indian mainland and has long been famous for its world-renowned tea production, which is primarily concentrated in the central highlands. In addition to its numerous stunning beaches and lush vegetation, the island also beckons visitors with its rich cultural history, featuring ancient royal sites and magnificent temples.
So what does Sri Lanka have to offer the ambitious sport angler? Well, primarily it’s about little big game fishing – species such as king mackerel, giant trevally, dorado, yellowfin tuna, bonito, wahoo, and a whole host of others. While there is a marlin population, the boats are practically unequipped for this type of fishing, so catches are considered lucky.

So it’s already clear at this point: you won’t find highly professionally equipped yachts or state-of-the-art sportfishing boats here. Rather, these are predominantly ordinary fishing boats that have been converted for sportfishing. However, this also has the advantage that the cost of individual fishing trips is significantly lower than what you’re used to at most other destinations worldwide. The fishing is appealing to very active anglers—since, for example, you can fish effectively for giant trevally with poppers—as well as for trolling or live bait fishing—or, of course, a combination of whatever’s working best at the moment.
Sri Lanka is ideal both for “pure fishing”—that is, as a destination for a fishing-only vacation—and, for example, for families, who can plan a few days of fishing along with beach stays on both coasts—combined with a trip across the island—where they can experience many tourist highlights. We therefore have two different packages in our program that cater to both target groups and are particularly attractive for one or two anglers.

Sri Lanka – “Pure Fishing”
Location: Negombo on the west coast of Sri Lanka (only about a 45-minute transfer from Colombo Airport). This package is designed for 1–2 anglers.
Description: Upon arrival in Colombo, you will be picked up at the airport by our local partner and taken to the Camelot Beach Hotel in Negombo. Accommodation in a single or double room, including breakfast, for one week. Six days of fishing on a 6-meter boat with a skipper. Fishing gear can be provided, but you are also welcome to bring your own. Daily transfers from the hotel to the boat and back are included. At the end of the tour, you will be transferred back to Colombo Airport.

Sri Lanka – Fishing and Family Trip
Locations: Negombo (West Coast) + Trincomalee (East Coast)
Description: Upon arrival in Colombo, you will be met at the airport by our local partner and transferred to the Dolphin Hotel in Negombo (approximately a 45-minute drive). Accommodation in a double or family room, including breakfast, is provided for the first four nights. Two days of fishing on a 6-meter boat with a skipper (for a maximum of two people) are included. Fishing equipment can be provided, but you are also welcome to bring your own. Daily transfers from the hotel to the boat and back are included.
After four days, you will be picked up from the hotel and travel to the other side of the island to Trincomalee. The journey takes almost a full day, and you can plan various activities along the way (these are not included in the trip price). Examples include an elephant safari in one of the national parks, visits to the Dambulla cave temple, or the Sigiriya rock fortress. Accommodation in a double or family room at the Hotel Trinco Blue/Trincomalee for 4 nights. Two days of fishing on a 6-meter boat with skipper (for a maximum of 2 people). Fishing equipment can be provided, but you are also welcome to bring your own. Daily transfers from the hotel to the boat and back are included.
At the end of the 4 days, transfer back to Colombo airport for your return flight. If desired, additional nights in Negombo or directly in Colombo can be added after your return flight (for sightseeing).
We can also organize a customized tour tailored to your specific preferences. Just ask us!
Arrival
Getting there:
Several airlines offer flights to Colombo. Examples include Etihad, Emirates, and Qatar Airways. If you’re not pressed for time, a stopover in Abu Dhabi or Dubai is a good option – at least on one leg of your journey. We would be happy to provide you with a separate offer for this.
Best time to travel:
Due to the different monsoons (northeast and southwest), which occur at different times in Sri Lanka, the island can be visited practically year-round. Generally, the southwest coast is best visited from December to April, while the northeast coast is best from March to September. Taking the overlap between these two periods, March is a particularly good month to travel. On the coasts, you can expect a tropical climate with temperatures around 30°C, while it can be significantly milder and cooler in the highlands (around 16°C). During the monsoon season, there are usually short but intense rain showers and/or thunderstorms. Between the showers, however, the sun often shines again.
The southwest coast in May and the northeast coast in December/January should be avoided, as flooding is possible in these areas. Of course, all of this is relative, as the weather is never guaranteed.
The boats
In Sri Lanka, you’ll fish from relatively simple local fishing boats designed for a maximum of two anglers. You’ll have a local skipper who is very familiar with the fishing spots. The boats are typically around 6 meters long and powered by outboard motors. Life jackets are provided on board. Fishing equipment can be provided or you can bring your own.

We have selected several hotels for you on both the west and east coasts. Below is a brief description of the most popular hotels:
