"If you want to catch a Blue Marlin, the Cape Verde Islands are the world's best area"

a crew member told me on one of the Big Game boats in Cape Verde on my first visit.

I was all the more impressed when I heard where in the world he had worked on Big Game boats. Names like Great Barrier Reef / Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Ascension, Ghana … came out… I was amazed — whoever has seen so much and is so convinced must know what he is saying. And he was right…

We were able to bring 12 Blue Marlins (up to 350 pounds) to the boat within a week, and we were just on average what was caught on the “Bebiche” this season – a total of 212 of the combative sword bearers from April to June . Incredible. The catch was supplemented by a whole series of beautiful Wahoos and a Tiger Shark of 500 pounds … These are results for which many big gamers have traveled half the globe for years.

There is no question that a tour had to be on the program the following year as well – and once again this world-class area was to prove its exceptional position. This time numerous Blue Marlins up to 620 pounds (!), Several Nurse Sharks and a Yellowfin Tuna of 220 pounds could be caught.

Location and climate

The Cape Verde Islands are located about 500 km west of Dakar / Senegal and 1700 km south of the Canaries in the Atlantic Ocean. Most Europeans find the climate very pleasant – the temperatures are around 24 ° C in winter and around 30 ° C in summer. A steady northeast trade wind blows, with stronger winds in the winter half year. The island of São Vicente with the port city of Mindelo is the starting point for the Big Game trips, with the boats sometimes going for several days to the neighboring islands of Sao Nicolao or Sao Antao if the fishing there is more productive.

The fishing

The main target fish in Cape Verde is clearly the Blue Marlin. Theoretically, it can be caught all year round, but with better prospects from March to October. Winter poses greater weather risks and less is caught. The average weight of the fish is around 220-240 pounds, but Marlins are regularly landed in the 500 pound class and so-called “Grander”, i.e. 1000 pounders occur. Marlin is almost exclusively fished with large trolling lures. Strong Wahoos (mostly 20-40 pounds) are getting hooked regularly. From June onwards, 100-200 pound Yellowfin Tuna arrive and later in summer Dorado and Sailfish. Every now and then White Marlin, Spearfish and even Swordfish are hooked.

A special kind of challenge is the evening natural bait fishing for Tiger Shark (only at Sao Nicolao / can be booked separately). These fish can easily weigh 600 pounds, or even more, and are quite demanding, even with heavy equipment. Here too, the possible by-catch is not too bad: Large Amberjacks, table-sized Rays, and other types of Sharks (e.g. Nurse or Hammerhead Sharks).

Accommodation

If you fish on board the Bebiche, you can stay in the very cozy apartment of your skipper Ferdi. 2 bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, bathroom with shower / toilet, roof terrace are available for guests in his house. Breakfast is already included here. For anglers fishing from the Sambo and Smoker it will be overnight stay in the hotel (about € 80, – double room). Guests on the Hemmingway will also stay with their host in the apartment.  A special feature is when the boats go to the neighboring islands of Sao Nicolao/Sao Antao (in case the fishing is better over there). In this case, you will always live in the hotel (the skipperwill organise this).

How to get there

Best option is by TAP via Lisbon to Sao Vicente. Depending on the flight schedule, an overnight stay in Lisbon may be required – but this should be seen as a good reason to explore the city a little. There are also charter flights with (Tuifly (from Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hanover and Munich directly to Sal. From here you have to take a small island flight (TACV) to Sao Vicente. We will be happy to make you an individual offer.

We work with different boats in Cape Verde. These are mainly the “Bebiche”, the “Smoker”, the “Sambo”, the “Hemmingway”, the “Nha Crêtcheu” and the “Dimeu”

Bebiche

A 31 foot Bertram with 2 x 315 HP, modern navigation technology, VHF marine radio, color echo sounder, 2 outrigger, fighting chair and toilet.

The “Bebiche” became famous through captain Peter Döbler and handed over the boat to the new skipper Ferdinand Worst, who has also been fishing for Cabo Verde for many years. During some of my personal trips, I was able to find out for myself that “Ferdi” was initiated by Peter into all secrets.

The Bebiche may not be one of the most modern ships anymore, but — after all, more than 2000 (!) Marlines have been landed on it only in the last 15 years. It is a very nice boat for fishing and it has the right “sound”. Experienced Big Gamers know that the sound waves emitted by the boat (generated by engine noise / vibrations in connection with the hull as a resonance body) either have an attractive or a deterrent effect on the fish. The 31er Bertram is clearly one of the boats that look like a “Marlin magnet”.

The fishing equipment consists of 80/50 lbs harness (Shimano / Penn reels and specially made rods). You can, but do not have to bring your own fishing tackle.

Smoker

The Smoker is a 37 foot Bertram with 2 x 450 HP, fighting chair, and custom rods (Shimano Tiagra).

The boat is mainly specialized in stand up fishing (not using the fighting chair) and also has all the necessary equipment (including special stand up rods + gimbal + harness) on board.

The boat fishes almost exclusively with teasers  and so-called “pitchbaits” – these are natural baits that are then presented to the attracted Marlins. This method has proven to be extremely successful. With the catch quota, the Smoker has always been among the top 3 boats in Mindelo – out of a total of 15-20 big game boats. You have to do that first …

Sambo

The Sambo is also a 37 foot Bertram, which is motorized with 2 x 425 HP Caterpillar machines. Equipped with 80/50 lbs equipment and jigging equipment (20000 Stellas), the boat fishes practically the same as the Smoker.

The Hemmingway is a 36 foot Riviera which is powered by 2 x 370 HP Cummins engines.
