COSTA RICA – Operation “GRAND SLAM” 09.06.-17.06.2022

This will be THE highlight of June 2022 – fishing aboard the best marlin boat in the entire Pacific — officially awarded by the Billfish Foundation.

A geologically unique location can be found directly off the coast of Golfito, in the south of Costa Rica, not far from the border with Panama – because here three tectonic plates meet, which have created an underwater landscape rutted by mountains and gorges, which is also characterised by volcanic activity. This has a very positive influence on the local ocean currents, which in turn brings with it an enormous amount of food – including smaller (bonito) and larger (yellowfin) tuna species – and in their wake, the kings of the oceans: marlins. There is hardly a place in the world where swordtails are so numerous. In addition, besides the dominant species (Blue Marlin), the Black and Striped Marlin are also regular catches.

A so-called “Grand Slam” (3 different swordfish within 24 hours) is possible here at any time, especially as there are often plenty of Sailfish and there is also the chance of catching Broadbill (swordfish) during night fishing.

The success has a name: The “Thumper” has been a guarantee for exceptionally good marlin catches for years and was awarded by the Billfish Foundation in 2018 as the boat with the most blue marlin tag & releases in the entire Pacific Ocean. Add in the black and striped marlin, and you’re looking at an average of 5.9 marlin per day of fishing – unbelievable, but officially certified. We don’t guarantee catches anywhere on the planet – not even here – but with numbers like that, it must be more than a miracle if you don’t have success during the marlin season (mid-April to February)….

In addition to a very professional crew and a boat perfectly equipped for marlin fishing, there is another aspect to the exceptional area described above: the boat owner has several so-called “FADs” (Fish Attraction Devices, i.e. devices mostly made of wood, which are anchored offshore under the water surface and thus magnetically attract small fish and large predators) whose position, of course, only he knows. In combination with the naturally created spots, which can also only be reached by large yachts, this seems to be the key to this sensational success. And let’s not forget: on the “Thumper” the baits are in the water with the first sunlight until nightfall in the fishing area. The journey to the fishing grounds and also the return journey are made at night.

Another thing worth mentioning is that the Pacific is called the “Silent Ocean” for a reason, and the latitude at which Golfito/Costa Rica is located is practically rarely hit by strong winds. This is not only important with regard to possible days of absence, but also makes life on board much easier – because fishing in “duck pond” is simply more pleasant than in rough seas.
