This will be THE highlight of June 2023 – fishing on board the best marlin boat in the entire Pacific — officially awarded by the Billfish Foundation.
A unique geological location can be found just off the coast of Golfito, in the south of Costa Rica, not far from the border with Panama – here 3 tectonic plates meet, which through their activities have created an underwater landscape rutted by mountains and canyons, which is also characterized by volcanic activity. This has a very positive influence on the local ocean currents, which brings with it an abundance of food – including smaller (bonito) and larger (yellowfin) tuna species – and in their entourage, the kings of the oceans: marlins. There is hardly a place in the world where swordtails are so numerous. In addition to the dominant species (Blue Marlin), also the Black and Striped Marlin are regular catches.
A so-called “Grand Slam” (3 different swordfish within 24 hours) is possible at any time, especially because there are often a lot of Sailfish and additionally there is the chance to catch Broadbill (swordfish) during the night fishing.
The success has a name: The “Thumper” is for years a guarantee for exceptionally good marlin catches and has been awarded by the Billfish Foundation in 2018 as the boat with the most Blue Marlin Tag&Releases in the entire Pacific Ocean. If you add in the Black and Striped Marlin, you get a stunning 5.9 Marlin average per fishing day – downright unbelievable, but officially certified. We don’t guarantee a catch anywhere on the planet – not even here – but considering such numbers, it must be more than devilish not to have success during the marlin season (mid-April to February)….
In addition to a highly professional crew and the boat that is perfectly equipped for Marlin fishing, another aspect is added to the exceptional area described above: The boat owner has several so-called “FAD’s” (Fish Attraction Device, i.e. devices mostly made of wood, which are anchored offshore under the water surface and thus magnetically attract small fish and large predators) whose position, of course, only he knows. In combination with the naturally created spots, which can also only be reached by large yachts, this seems to be the key to this sensational success. And not to forget: on the “Thumper” the baits are in the water with the first sunlight until nightfall in the fishing area. The journey to the fishing areas and also the return journey are done at night.
Another thing worth mentioning is that the Pacific is called the “Pacific Ocean” for a reason, and the latitude at which Golfito/Costa Rica is located is very rarely hit by strong winds. This is not only important with regard to possible lost days, but also makes life on board much easier – because fishing in “duck pond” is simply more pleasant than in rough seas.
